ACCORDING TO THE world’s largest chocolate manufacturer, the world’s insatiable demand for chocolate will outstrip supply by 2020.
The Barry Callebault Group has expressed concerns that by 2020, the difference between how much chocolate the world wants and how much it can produce will increase to 1 million metric tons. By 2030, that figure will double.
The anticipated shortage is all thanks to insane increases in demand in the likes of Asia and South America, as well as “increasing economic and environmental pressures on cocoa farms”.
According to the Chicago Tribune, we stuffed our faces with more chocolate than the world could feasibly produce last year. This year, supply barely kept up with demand, despite a bumper crop, which doesn’t bode well.
This is not the first time fears have been expressed over the world’s chocolate supply. In 2010, John Mason of Nature Conservation Research Council predicted that cocoa shortages would result in chocolate becoming a luxury commodity like caviar.
It will become so rare and so expensive that the average Joe just won’t be able to afford it.
